Overview

The Hong Kong Institute of Education is the only University Grants Committee funded institution dedicated solely to the professional development of teacher education in Hong Kong. Annie Cheng, a Research Assistant, will be using NVivo 8 for her longitudinal study.

Annie is looking at the difference between student teachers’ planned or ‘ideal’ teaching strategies and their actual experience in the classroom. The longitudinal study, which started in 2006 and will finish in 2010, plans to bridge the gap between the two and drive curriculum improvements to improve the quality of teacher education at the Hong Kong Institute.

“It’s powerful and functional. I worked on my own project within the beta software. I use a lot of audio and video (interviewing student teachers and observing them with their pupils) and usually I have to review, transcribe and prepare the information before inputting it into the software. Because I could upload audio and video directly into NVivo 8, it removed several steps of that pre-work.

“I’m one of eight researchers and I liked the fact that there are features that now allow members of a team to comment and then come back together and compare their coding (analysis) and work. This is helpful, because different observers will notice different elements or characteristics from the same video footage. We can compare our observations and see what we have missed.

“I know some researchers are reluctant to use software but people really need to break through their fear. It provides great convenience for data management, enables you to structure your work and gives you more time for thinking and analyzing.”

Overview

Discover how sports coach UK’s Melina Timson-Katchis, Research Consultant, foresees the use and importance of NVivo 8 for the organization. sports coach UK is dedicated to guiding the development and implementation of a world leading coaching system for all coaches at every level in the UK.

Melina is leading sports coach UK’s Coach Tracking Study. The four year study of UK coaches is the largest and most in-depth study of coaches in the world and involves more than 2000 professionals across the UK.

The research examines coaches’ development as coaching professionals and seeks to understand the impact of coach education and support programs over time. sports coach UK’s work is particularly poignant given the increased use of coaching by the general public and the importance of high quality coaching to elite development, especially in the run up to the 2012 Olympics.

“The main feature of the program ( NVivo 8 ) that attracted us was the ability it will give us to organize the large amount of data we have coming through, without relying on lots and lots of paper. We have just under 900 pages of transcripts from the ‘year one interviews’…the software will help us analyze and retrieve data more quickly, share it amongst the team and manage the information year on year.

“( NVivo 8 ) will make analysis so much easier and more in-depth but more importantly it will give us additional support as a team. A lot of our projects are interlinked, so being able to retrieve data from many sources for one particular project will strengthen our work. It will also enhance the efficiency of our team. We all work on varied projects and due to the nature of our work we are not always together in the office at the same time. (NVivo) will help us to co-ordinate things much better.”

Overview

Associate Professor and Chair of the State University of New York’s Anthropology Department, Dr. Victor De Munck, introduced NVivo software to his undergraduate Anthropology Research Methods class in late 2008. NVivo was integrated into a first year class where students used it for their assignments involving the analysis of life histories, stories and beliefs.

What characteristics do Americans look for in a future President? How are drugs impacting American college students? Do young people still have faith in the institution of marriage? What does a campus-based religious community really think about the theory of evolution?

Forget longitudinal studies and dissertations; these are the questions posed by a group of undergraduate anthropology students at the State University of New York (SUNY), New Paltz as part of an innovative trial involving qualitative data analysis (QDA) software program, NVivo 8.

Giving undergraduates new tools

Associate Professor and Chair of the SUNY’s Anthropology Department, Dr. Victor De Munck, introduced NVivo software to his undergraduate Anthropology Research Methods class in late 2008. While QDA packages are regularly taught at a graduate level, the use of the software for first year students is now steadily gaining traction.

“Until recently, few universities, either public or private, taught QDA software at the undergraduate level and even less used it in their anthropology classes,” he said.

“But the majority of data collected by anthropologists – the things people say to the ethnographer – is qualitative. Attending to the issues of reliability and validity of this data is critical to the research process. To teach my students how to only conduct interviews, or to simply have them extract quotes from an interview to support a particular interpretation, would have been to short-change them. They’re smart and ambitious – why shouldn’t they have the same tools as their graduate peers?”

Taking software from the field into the classroom

Dr. De Munck has been teaching research methods, social organization, cultural and cognitive anthropology at SUNY since 1996 and recently published the book, Research Design and Methods for Studying Culture (Altamira Press 2009). An accomplished researcher in his own right, he started using NVivo last year while working in Lithuania on a Fulbright Scholarship.

“I needed a more effective way of managing and using my interview materials to discern the cultural patterns and processes that I was observing as my research progressed,” said Dr. De Munck.

“I’d been using the traditional cut-and-paste method with index cards. While I’d played with another package, I found it too difficult to learn on my own. My colleagues recommended NVivo and it was my first proper attempt at using a QDA package.”

NVivo 8 allows users to import and analyze documents, video, audio and images side-by-side. It’s used by academic, government and commercial organizations in 150 countries on a wide range of projects, from literature reviews and ethnography, to grounded theory, discourse analysis and mixed methods research.

What started in Lithuania continued in the United States, with Dr. De Munck integrating NVivo into the undergraduate anthropology research methods class at SUNY upon his return. Twenty of his students were introduced to NVivo 8 via an interactive, online demonstration with one of QSR’s US-based Business Development Managers, Stacy Penna. This allowed the students to see the software in action, ask questions, and receive answers from Stacy in real time.

Choosing NVivo over traditional methods

While the software was integrated into the module they were learning, Dr. De Munck’s students were given the choice to either use NVivo 8 or rely on traditional manual methods for their assignment, which involved the analysis of life histories, stories, thoughts and beliefs. Seventy five per cent of the class chose to use NVivo.

“I did not need to sell the students on the pragmatic benefits of learning the software. My undergraduates were quick to see that using NVivo to organize and analyze their own data was going to give them an advantage. They were highly motivated and acquired basic competency quite quickly — within two weeks,” he said.

“Two of the students learnt the software so well that they even used the transcription function to transcribe their interviews within the software.”

To make the learning experience more rigorous, Dr. De Munck employed a combination of research approaches. His students started the course with statistical methods, pie square, frequencies and very structured interviews, and then followed with more unstructured methods, including in depth interviews. Their topics ranged enormously, from religious beliefs and drug use, to social norms and issues of love, sex and culture. The students using NVivo imported their audio and text into the software and used its tools to help query, organize, and extract themes from their data.

“The emphasis in my class is on managing data, assigning themes – or coding – and then using queries to help analyze interviews and other narrative data in various modes, including through text, email, visual, audio and audio-visual materials,” he said.

“NVivo 8 empowered the students to do that. They also learnt that qualitative data can be systematically analyzed and just as reliable as quantitative data. And, if you take sampling considerations into account, that it can perhaps even offer more external validity.”

Giving New Paltz students an advantage

As part of the pilot, several of the undergraduate students provided feedback on their use of NVivo. The responses were overwhelmingly positive, with most noting the software was easy to use and beneficial.

“It helped organize the coding process and allowed me to view my transcripts fluidly,” said one student.

“It allowed important multimedia files to be sorted in this program so instead of having to save each file in different places on your computer or a flash drive, you can have one organized program with all the different sources,” noted another.

Dr. De Munck said while he wanted his students to gain insight into the use of QDA software in the ethnography field, he also appreciated it offered them an advantage over their peers. Accordingly, students who achieved either an A or B grade in the course were awarded a certificate recognizing their use of NVivo.

“Not many undergraduates, even from more prestigious schools, will be able to say that they have experience or the know how to use a program like NVivo 8,” he said.

“Learning how to use NVivo and actually coding and analyzing their own data is a tremendous advantage for SUNY undergraduate students. It will give them a leg up both for graduate school and for employment because they will be able to include in their resume that they have competency in using a popular QDA program.”

Based on the success of Dr. De Munck’s pilot, the State University of New York plans to purchase a site license for NVivo 8, allowing the software to become a regular fixture in its undergraduate classes. Dr. De Munck’s first-year Anthropology Research Methods students will benefit from extended modules incorporating the software in Fall 2009 and Spring 2010.

Overview

Ross Perkins, Senior Research Associate is a key contributor in The Office of Educational Research and Outreach (OERO), which is part of Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. He will use NVivo 8 on a project that examines the adoption and integration of multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) like Second Life.

Ross is examining the adoption and integration of multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) like Second Life.

He is collecting data through face-to-face interviews, web-based surveys, text and voice chat within the virtual world. He’s also using screen shots (BMP images) of project phases, text found on blogs and listservs, and even movies made in the environment (‘machinima’). Approximately 150 high school students, teachers, and technology integration specialists are expected to be involved in the project.

“A number of the new features will be very useful. I plan to use NVivo 8 on my MUVEs project, as well as for ongoing and future literature reviews. The format of information will include a number of documents in PDF format, audio recordings of interviews, and digital images (screen shots) of the work. The feature that initially caught my attention was the ability to import and code PDF documents. Currently, one has to create proxy documents for them and link to them. Having the ability to work with them directly in NVivo 8 will save time and effort.

“Though I do not personally do team-based research, a number of faculty members are on research teams. The added ability to view codes (nodes) by team member and to compare coding is a valuable addition. Sharing research findings via the web, or through exporting to Word documents, is also important.”

Qualitative research has always had a role to play in examining the links between lifestyle and disease in an attempt to find new ways to improve society’s general health. Increasingly, qualitative data analysis software has also become an integral part of these important studies.

Assistant Professor Ruben Calduch is the Health, Medicine and Society Director of the Faculty of Medicine at the Universidad Nacional de Tucuman in Argentina. Ruben is using QSR International’s NVivo software to explore the links between social issues and health problems in South America. Here, he shares details of his research, his experience using NVivo 7, and his plans for the Spanish language version of NVivo 8.

Enhanced credibility

Ruben heads up a team of researchers instrumental in examining the impact of social settings and human bonds on general health conditions in Argentina. Research in this area is particularly complex given its focus on understanding how things like social settings, attitudes, economic issues and culture can impact on the health-sickness process. Part of the challenge is the need to evaluate substantial information across a wide variety of mediums, including written data, audio files and unedited vision of subjects in a natural or group environment.

After more than a decade in qualitative research in the health field, Assistant Professor Ruben Calduch first came across NVivo software in 2001. Ruben said NVivo gave shape to and organized his raw data, which helped him and his fellow researchers to evaluate their information and draw conclusions. “I had a sense of joy when one could see what was happening while working with the information. The sensation was that we could show what we did in our (qualitative) field, in the same way statisticians do in theirs,” he said.

The ability to be able to share their results with researchers in other fields by using the software’s functionality added greater credibility to the findings and assisted when teaching students. “It made qualitative research credible for people coming from traditional experimental or statistical research,” said Ruben.

Greater collaboration

One feature of NVivo is that it allows a team of users to enter data individually and merge separate projects while still identifying the work of individuals. For Ruben’s team research project, this functionality was essential as each of the team members gathered their own data with texts from interviews, workshops, videos and audio files. Each team member then imported the raw data and did their own coding.

“Afterwards, we met and compared the coding, discussed it and built a common tree together. It was useful to present it in a graphical way through presentations, either in undergraduate classes or at conferences and lectures,” Ruben said.

The capability of NVivo to manage very rich data was of particular importance for the research team who were able to make sense of a wide variety of complex information. The way NVivo presents the data is also of benefit in the academic setting.

“I teach at medical school, and always have to express abstract or complex terms or ideas from the mental health field for undergraduate students and to doctors. They love to ‘see and hear’ what happens with people and it is hard for them to understand psychosocial issues. And of course this is where NVivo helps,” Ruben said.

“The coding processes gave shape to raw data, the modelling shows ideas working, and the matrix shows conclusions in the density of the data.”

The organization supports and encourages the use of qualitative research among faculty, staff, and students and is currently championing the use of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) across campus. Judy’s own research focuses on the use of QDAS and the use of visual data in qualitative research.

“Because my doctoral students include visual data of various sorts in their research work, the new visual components of NVivo 8 are absolutely critical for us.

“Many of our faculties also have research projects in the works or in planning stages that will be making strong use of NVivo 8 – without this tool they would not be able to conduct research of the level and quality required in today’s world. From music education, health promotion and disease prevention to regional economic development – we have researchers of many different kinds in our one institution who are making use of QDAS.”

Nossas vitórias incluem 2009 Market Research Society / Association for Survey Computing Award for Technology Effectiveness ao prestigioso Research Awards 09 in the United Kingdom no mês passado.

Primeiro nós conquistamos na categoria IT & Business Services o The Age / Dun & Bradstreet Victorian Business Awards, antes de ganharmos o título de 2009 Victorian Business of the Year.

A forte presença devesse aos títulos do ano anterior, quando vencemos na categoria Information and Communications Technology do Governor of Victoria Export Awards na Austrália, e a QSR foi apontada no ‘Standout Businesses of 2008’ da Dynamic Business Magazine.
